A stroll around Lymm Dam

Having spent a weekend with friends, breaking up the long drive home, I took a walk around Lymm Dam, Cheshire. It’s a beautiful tranquil spot with woodland, bridleways and lake.  You wouldn’t believe that it’s just five minutes’ drive away from the roar of the M6. A great place for the kids to explore and climb trees (which are enormous) or dog walkers to take a few laps around the lake. The Bridgewater canal and Trans Pennine trail aren’t far away. If you wanted to incorporate a bigger walk do the 3.5 mile Lymm Heritage trail.

With mostly accessible paths I saw a few kids in buggies or on scooters too. A big attraction for the kids is below the Church where the rocks down a bank, eroded by sub glacial erosion, have deep channels. Called ‘The Bluff’ it’s perfect for kids to slide down and explore. There were many whoops of delight from the children playing there as I walked past. If you think your kids are likely to slide down the rocks old clothes are recommended! The red sandstone dust is hard to get off. Once you’ve slid down the rocks and continued your walk is the welcome sight of the ice cream van, parked by the side of the road. An incentive I know would get my kids to consider another lap!

I really enjoyed my Sunday stroll and it was nice to stretch my legs before continuing my long drive home.

Practical tips!

Lymm Dam can be found along the A56

There is a small carpark along Crouchley Lane or street parking along the front of the dam.

Have you visited Lymm Dam? Or have another Cheshire walk I should try next time? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Enjoyable read, thanks for that. I live in Lymm & walk around the Dam regularly, and as an amateur photographer I take a lot of photographs during my walk. you can see them at :-http://www.normysphotography.co.uk/2019-lymm-around

  2. Love Lymm Dam. Also love Moore Nature Reserve. WA4 6XE. Up to 10 minutes drive away. Beautiful off the track lake with a walk around it, benches, pretty spots for lunch. Plenty of wildlife, butterflies and hides to get a good look at them. Small car park available facing the entrance. (Which is over the quiet Lapwing lane, over a style and up some steps)

    1. Thank you for sharing the Moore Nature Reserve details, it sounds a lovely place to visit next time.
